Surface Broaches



Surface broaching is especially effective when compared to other machining because it produces highly finished sources of complex shapes with exacting dimensions and tolerances at a rate of 3 to 9 times faster than the milling and machining processes. These Broaches are used to remove material from an external surface are commonly known as surface broaches. Such broaches are passed over the work piece surface to be cut, or the work piece passes over the tool on horizontal, vertical or chain machines to produce flat or contoured surfaces. Most surface broaches are special and designed for a specific application, but some standard, general-purpose broaches are available. Broach holders can often be standardized in several sizes to hold various surface broaches. Only the more common of the many different surface broaches available are discussed in this section.
Spline Broaches is an instrument for cutting and sizing. They are usually made for only one user and for only a particular machining operation. Spline Broaches are utilized for manufacturing purpose to form holes or cut the surfaces. A spline broach is also brought into use to cut a spline, a shaft along with a sequence of longitudinal and straight protections that fit into the gap of a mating division.
Broaches in general are of different types depending upon the functions they have to perform. Broaches that are made from one solid piece of material are called as solid broaches. Another broach which has a hole through the center where it mounts on an arbor is called shell broaches. Shell broaches cost more initially, but save cost overall if the broach must be replaced often because the pilots are on the mandrel and do not have to be reproduced with each replacement. Broaches that are commonly used for large internal broaching applications are called modular broaches. Broaches that are used for producing serration confirming to DIN as per specific requirement are known as serration broaches.
Rotary broaches are special types of surface broaches. They are not commonly used, but they do offer advantages when producing work with external radial forms. In pot broaching, one or more work pieces are generally pulled or pushed up or pushed down through the bore of a pot broach sub holder that is normally stationary on a vertical machine. There are three basic types of pot broaches having internal cutting tooth configurations: ring, stick, and combination ring and stick. Surface broaches find their application in automobile industry and industries of similar kind.

Gear Cutting Tools



Gear cutting is the process of creating gears. The most common process of gear cutting includes broaching, hobbing and machining. The gears are generally made from metal, plastic and wood. Broaching process of gear cutting is used for very large gears or splines. Broaching in gear cutting is mostly used in very high production runs.
